Considerable research into the use of UV light for treatment of disease was initiated in the 1870’s. One of the first researchers to experiment with UV light was Niels Ryberg Finsen, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for “Physiology of Medicine” in 1903 for his UV treatments of 300 people suffering from Lupus in Denmark.

Another pioneer to experiment with Light Therapy was Kurt Naswitis, who directly irradiated the blood with UV light through a shunt in 1922. Then beginning in the 1920’s and continuing through the 1930’s, Seattle scientist Emmett Knott, D.Sc., sought to harness, in an extracorporeal way, the known bactericidal property of ultraviolet rays in order to treat infectious diseases of the blood. On September 11, 1928 Knott received Patent Number 1,683,877 for “Means for Treating Bloodstream Infections” as a result of a patent application filed on March 3, 1927 for a UV apparatus he built. Subsequently he received Patent Number 2,308,516 on January 19, 1943, which contained certain changes to the apparatus. The machine received an FDA “grandfather” status as a device that was sold and distributed in interstate commerce prior to 1976.

Many other physicians in Europe and America followed the steps of Finsen and Knott, such as Miley, Christenson, Beck, Olney, Anderson, Hancock, Rebbeck, Barrett, Moser, Bland, Von Pohle, Woolfan, Hughes, Beroza, Davidson, Stauffer, Havens, Sborov, Barmasov and Collbert to mention some notables.

These physicians combined, performed over 300,000 clinical tests and besides their great curative success the most notable fact they mention is that not one person died from this treatment modality throughout 50 years of testing.

The dramatic advances in antibiotics, vaccines, and corticosteroids in the 1950s put a halt to the growing interest in UVBI therapy. Awash in enthusiasm over the new wonder drugs from 1955 until the 1990’s only a few American physicians continued to work with a UVBI device. Even though it was illogical to set aside a therapy that could treat some viral diseases) e.g.,chronic hepatitis and viral pneumonia) that was impervious to antibiotics, this in fact happened. Research into this low cost and effective therapy came to a virtual halt. The technique was never again taught in medical schools and training centers. Special interests began their reign!

It is difficult to justify the way American medical science overlooked the many reports of clinical trials in Russian and East German medical journals and books over the past two decades, especially given the intense effort to identify promising approaches to the treatment of HIV and related conditions. The development of multi-drug resistance to antibiotics in recent years and the search for less toxic therapies have led to a renewed interest in Light Therapy. We are now “back to the future”. We are pleased that the Health & Wellness Foundation is in the forefront of this rejuvenation.

Dr. William Campbell Douglass, the Author of “Into The Light” is considered the modern day “Guru” who had notable gains in recent years and because his treatment modality was virtually drug free and comparatively inexpensive. He was considered a maverick by the “established” medical community.

In the 1970s interest in Photoluminescence revived in Russia. About the same time Dr. Edelson at Yale University developed a new form of BI termed “Photopheresis”, which entailed triggering chemotherapy with a small dose of UVBI. However, this method has a cost of $2000.00 per treatment. It is believed that Yale University currently treats approximately 900 patients per year with this therapy. By the 1990s, Russian physicians were using low-intensity lasers beamed down a wave-guide directly into the blood (LBI) to achieve roughly equivalent effects.

In recent years the FDA has approved one Photopheresis machine, developed by a company called Therakos®, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Dr. Eldeson of Therakos® developed an Extracorporeal Photopheresis Blood Irradiator. They were granted preliminary certification to perform clinical trials with HIV and Graft-Versus-Host Disease. This study in a clinical setting began in 1990 and was initiated by Columbia University’s Photopheresis Unit in Morristown, NY. Using the “Therakos”® Irradiator they demonstrated that 4 of 7 patients (57%) with HIV/AIDS Related Complex became NEGATIVE after 5 to 19 phototherapy sessions and remained so for 14 to 16 months after the termination of the study. The major drawback of the Therakos® treatment modality is its prohibitive cost ($5000 per treatment) and long sessions that last between four to five hours each. (The delivery device that H&W Foundation is currently working with costs less than $100 per treatment and takes forty minutes per session!)

The Foundation believes that further development of Oxidative Medicine and Light Therapies will open a veritable cornucopia of therapeutic possibilities that will benefit the future of mankind, effectively and inexpensively. The Foundation is dedicated to this purpose.

H&WF is pleased to report that UV therapy, in combination with certain Oxidative therapies, was used successfully in treating AIDS patients in Africa. The results were referred to as “miraculous”. See Dr. B.D. Smith Letter in the “Interesting Items” Section.

The following information will help illustrate that through the years new, innovative ideas, which did not conform to mainstream medicine, have been overlooked and in some cases intentionally suppressed.

“Researchers have long suspected that the key to curing many illnesses lies within the human body itself. This notion of stimulating the body’s own immune system, as a weapon against diseases has been with us for at least a century.

In the late 1800’s, a New York surgeon named William Coley developed a vaccine that used the body’s own immune system as a weapon against cancer. However, as usually the case with early stage discoveries and research, Coley’s vaccine had mixed results. As a consequence, the very notion of a vaccine for cancer was marginalized to a footnote of history until the second half of the 20th century. As recently as the early 1970’s, standard medical textbooks contained almost nothing about Coley and his theory. Around that time though, a number of scientists began crudely tinkering with vaccines, again grinding up tumor cells and injecting them back into patients, as Coley had done a century prior to this. These recent attempts typically lacked any grounding in precise molecular knowledge of how recycled tumors could jump-start the immune system.

It seems that we are now “back to the future”. Scientists have again begun formulating a new generation of vaccines intending to utilize the body’s self-healing powers. This new renaissance in vaccinology is based on the theory that these vaccines will drive the body to attack the disease after it has already infiltrated, unlike conventional vaccines intended to prevent illness. The hope is that they will instruct the body’s own natural defenses to recognize and annihilate the sick, diseased cells. What’s more, this new generation of vaccines limits side effects, because like other targeted remedies, they sidestep damage to normal tissue.

According to the National Cancer Institute, 100 clinical vaccine trials are currently underway for a wide array of cancer, such as breast, lung, pancreatic, and colon. Many of these vaccines must be tailor-made for patients, which is a costly, time-consuming process. But some researchers have recently made headway with another strategy. Duke scientists announced in September in Nature Magazine that they whipped up an initial batch of “universal” cancer vaccine, which could potentially treat many types of cancer. In laboratory dishes, it triggered immune-system cells to kill a variety of human cancer cells.

Nowadays, trials are based on a more sophisticated understanding of immunology. Vaccines are being created that fuse specialized immune-system cells. These dendrite cells (the part of a nerve cell that carries impulses toward the cell body) function as most-wanted posters showcasing the attached tumor cells to other immune system cells so they will learn how to recognize and raid the enemy.”

COMMENTS

Please note that in the above reprinted article from US News and World report, it is emphasized that “Scientists have now determined that the future for effective treatment with the least side effects is utilizing the body’s own natural defenses.”

In most circles it would be considered “insane” to believe that there might be self-serving, amoral, influential and powerful interests at work. Is it possible that these interests could affect the very core medical technologies that govern the types of treatments that are available to us today? Let us examine this scenario. This supposition may not necessarily be an organized effort, per se, but we must ask ourselves this question. “Who would financially stand to lose the most if AIDS and a host of other diseases, like cancer, etc., were to actually be improved, cured, or at least treated back to a level of remission?” Hint: You wouldn’t need huge AIDS specialized government oversight agencies, and their supervisors, huge sums of private or federal research funds, billions of dollars in drug sales yearly, or healthcare workers, or hospitals, or grassroots AIDS groups, and their directors, and their funding. That is, of course, unless all these people and institutions were willing to open up their minds, stop “going along”, and be directed into POSITIVE life affirming employment and enterprises.

Historically, the huge “established” medical community and the Pharmaceutical Industry has all but ignored alternative therapies such as UV Light therapy, Oxidative Medicine and many other proven, but inexpensive therapies “that utilize the body’s own natural defenses”. Ask yourself; Would a pharmaceutical company earning billions of dollars yearly in sales, recognize, publicize or promote a treatment that costs a few dollars to administer? Unfortunately, circumstances indicate that the answer is a resounding “NO”!

Fortunately, thousands of independent minded medical professionals in tens of countries, over decades of time, have been using these treatment modalities successfully, inexpensively and with little or no serious side effects. Yes, thousands of pages of medical reports have also been written to prove the efficacy of these treatments, but they are largely ignored, and certainly not publicized.
